A walking school bus is nothing more than a parent volunteer (or volunteers) who take turns walking a group of students to school!

The SchoolPool ridematching feature makes it easy to to find other families who live nearby that you can walk with!

Creating A Walking School Bus

  1. Invite families who live nearby to walk through your SchoolPool Account:
    • Login to your SchoolPool Account and under the “SchoolPool tab” make sure you have a SchoolPool Trip added

    • Click "search for matches"
      • For travel modes, select “Walking”
      • For “Who Can See this Trip” select “Parents from Benjamin Rush Elementary”
    • On the results, if you have matches click “Send Messages to All”

    • Email these other families and let them know you are interested in starting a Walking School Bus
  2. Pick a route and take a test walk.

  3. Decide how often the group will walk together
    • It could be once a week or parent volunteers could rotate leading duties on a regular schedule
  4. Have fun!
    • And be sure to add your walking trips to your SchoolPool Calendar to help raise funds for your PTSA.

By walking together you can not only share the responsibility and time commitment of the daily 'commute' to school, but help students practice safe and healthy travel options.  By working with other parents and guardians you can be sure your students are traveling safely to and from school.
