With Halloween just around the corner and most of our days consisting of dark, windy, and wet weather it is the perfect time for a reminder on safe walk and bike to school practices.

When walking to school-

  • Wear bright/reflective backpacks and clothing! We know that most of us tend to be drawn to darker clothing, but drivers notice bright or reflective clothing so much easier. Plus, neon’s are sooo on trend.
  • Pay attention to school crossing guards and always use crosswalks to cross the street! Crossing guards are trained to keep us pedestrians safe. They know the rules!
  • Whenever you can use sidewalks!
  • Make eye contact with drivers before stepping into the street! If you must walk where there are no sidewalks or crosswalks it’s so important to make eye contact with drivers prior to going into the street, this can help ensure that you are seen by drivers.

When biking to school-

  • Always wear a helmet to keep that noggin safe! Redmond Police offer $10 helmets and fittings. Visit here for more information.
  • Follow the rules of the road and trails! Click here to watch our video.
  • Use correct bike lights! Click here for Washington state biking laws.
  • Wear layers to stay warm and dry! Just like with walking, make sure those outer layers are bright and/or reflective!
