National Bike to School Day is just around the corner and after a long Winter in the garage, it’s time to get your kids’ bikes ready for May 8th! But pumping up the tires is just a start.

Help make sure your student is traveling safely with these tips from Redmond SchoolPool:

Check the bike – Make sure tires are inflated, brakes work properly, and dust, dirt or other build up is not preventing proper pedal or wheel rotation.

Adjust the fit – adjust the bike seat and handle bars to best fit your child. They should be able to grip the handlebars with a slight bend in their elbows and their legs should be slightly bent at the bottom of the pedal stroke.

Safety first – Make sure helmet straps are buckled and helmet is tightened securely.

Make it a group ride – Ride with your kids, encourage neighborhood kids to ride together, or form a bike train with local friends.

Pay attention – Teach kids to watch out for hazards and obey street signs. The Kids’ Bike Rodeo at Redmond’s Bike Bash is a great place to practice these skills in a safe environment.

Most importantly, remember to enjoy the ride! Learn more about how your local student can earn rewards for themselves and their school for riding to school during National Bike Month at RedmondSchoolPool.com
